Softball #1 Star News Preview 3/3 -
Here's a closer look at the Star-News 2006 preseason poll.
1. Arcadia
No team improved more than the Apaches in 2005, and they have every starter returning, led by Rodriguez, who was
the centerpiece the program had been missing for years.
Rodriguez, only a junior, was 15-8 with a .072 ERA, and is primed to lead the Apaches to their first league title since
1994. She also batted .341, and is coming off a good season with the California Rage travel team.
Junior outfielder Shelby Gibbs, who had an on-base percentage of .495, is arguably the area's quickest leadoff hitter.
She was a Star-News and Pacific League first team selection.
Also back is third baseman Ivette Herzfeld, who batted .375, and senior Melanie Hansen, who is arguably one of the
best defensive catchers around.
The Apaches are coming off a first-round win in the Division III playoffs, and with new additions joining coach Ed
Anderson, this could be a season to remember.
"We're certainly excited about it," said Anderson. "When you have nine starters back from a playoff team, and your
pitcher is back playing better than ever, then you do get excited about the upcoming season."

Baseball #2 Star News Preview 3/2 - Link to article
2. Arcadia
Fresh off a 20-7 season and a coaching violation that forced the Apaches to forfeit a victory over Villa Park in the second round
of the CIF-Southern Section Division I playoffs, the Apaches are ready to move forward.
They will welcome several new players after graduating 10 seniors. But just like St. Francis in football or Pasadena in basketball,
the Apaches always have someone coming up ready to fill in big shoes.
They do have a key returning player in senior pitcher Nick Kennedy, who was amazing at the end of the season with a 1.29 ERA.
Also back are two of the area's best players - senior outfielder Jordan Larson, who batted .435 with 17 RBIs, and third baseman
Matt Smoley, who hit .338 with 23 RBIs.
Newcomers to watch include senior pitcher Alex Nathan and sophomore pitcher David Arredondo.
"We're young, but I like this group a lot," coach Sean McCorry said. "We don't have that dominating No. 1 pitcher. But we have
guys who can do the job, and with enough offense, we'll be fine."
