Dr. Seuss Went to War
http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/speccoll/dspolitic/
The political cartoons of Theodor Seuss Geisel were largely unknown until a book about them was published in 1999.  The UCSD Special Collections Department put them online by year and month so if you know when an event took place you may find a political cartoon about it.  Beware, the man who wrote children's books about equality and ecology was definitely politically incorrect in the 1940s when judged by our standards.

Naval pier in the San Francisco Bay Area. Five thousand tons of ammunition in ships being loaded by black sailors exploded, sending a blast more than 12,000 feet into
the sky."  This WebQuest explores racism against African American soldiers in the military. This project is written to meet California Standards.

Air Attack Over London-1940
http://www.ibiscom.com/airbattle.htm
"In the summer of 1940, twenty-one-year-old Pilot Officer John Beard was a member of a squadron of Hurricanes based near London. Waiting on the airfield while his plane is rearmed and refueled, Beard receives word of a large German attack force making its way up the Thames River towards London. The afternoon sun illuminates a cloudless blue sky as Beard and his fellow pilots lift their planes off the grass airstrip and climb to meet the enemy. The defenders level off at 15,000 feet and wait for the attackers to appear. . ."

An enthusiastic diarist, the doctor daily chronicled the Nazi occupation as events unfolded outside the window of his residence at the hospital. Discovery of his observations would have meant instant death. He therefore carefully concealed his manuscripts often changing their hiding place during five years of Nazi occupation."
