Standard or Goal:  Distinguish plant cells from animal cells.  Describe the role of the cell’s organelles.

Project Choices

Option#1

  1. With a partner of your choice,  you will choose a city or place that is symbolic to a cell.  For example, a supermarket can be a cell.  You can choose an animal or plant cell.

  1. You need to choose what the organelles will represent.  For example, the nucleus is the manager; endoplasmic reticulum is the conveyer belt; golgi body is the bagger; vacuole is the trash can; lysosomes is the recycler; etc.

  1. You also need to draw the “cell” and its “organelles”. So, draw the supermarket, cashier, trash can, etc.   Use colored  pencils.

  1. You cannot use my example or any of the examples I showed you in class.

  1. You need to use these words if you are doing an animal cell:  endoplasmic reticulum, golgi body, vacuoles, lysosomes, cytoplasm, cell membrane, chromatin, mitochondria, ribosomes, nucleus, and cell.  If you’re doing a plant cell, you need to use the above organelles including the cell wall and chloroplasts.

  1. Today, you will fill out the table below so that way the work is split.

  1. Be creative.

  1. When you finish the rough draft, show it to me and I will give you the paper to draw on.

  1. You will have time in class to work on it this week and next Monday & Tues.  Due Wed., September 28.

  1. It is worth 50 pts, 45% of your 1st quarter grade.

5 organelles for an animal cell= 15 pts (3 points each)

or 7 organelles for a plant cell

Typed, labeled, & explained all organelles= 15 pts. (3 pts each; size 16)

Location & accuracy of organelles=15

Creativity, Appearance, & Neatness= 5 pts.

Extra Credit:  10 extra credit points per person if your project is selected for being the most accurate and attractive project in each project category.  Students & Mrs. Ibrahim will vote.

Option #2:  Cell Model

1.  You will create a cell model out of any material. For example, clay, non-edible materials, wood, plastic, etc.

Cell model & organelles made out of a pillow.

2.            To earn the points for creativity, the organelles need to appear life-like.  The vacuole in a plant cell can be a water balloon because it stores water and it’s larger than in the animal cell.

  1. You can do either a plant or animal cell.

  1. If you’re doing a plant cell, the model should be square shaped.  If you’re doing an animal cell, the model should be round shaped.

  1. The model must be 3-D, not flat.

  1. The organelles must look accurate.  For example, the mitochondria should look rod-shaped, like a cigar.  However, don’t put a cigar in place of the mitochondria!

  1. Type all the organelles or have a legend.

  1. The model must show the following organelles:  cell membrane, cytoplasm, vacuole, mitochondria, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus, lysosomes, chromatin, and golgi body.  If you’re doing a plant cell, you must add the cell wall and chloroplasts.

  1. Size of cell model:  No specific requirement, but it can’t be too small that I need a microscope to see it or too big that it can’t fit through the door.

Option #3:  Cell Movie

1.  Dress up as the cell organelles and do a movie or play (soap opera, comedy, etc.) that shows its role.  You need to make props that show the name of the organelle and its function.  You will present this to the class next Wed., September 28.

Job list for Cell Project

What project you will be doing?

Fill out the chart below.

Organelle

Who’s responsible for this organelle?

For cell city & cell movie, project, write the “symbol” for each organelle.  For cell model, write what you will be each organelle out of.

Nucleus

Sketch your rough draft on the back of this paper.

I will carry out my jobs and will not give the excuse, “my partner wouldn’t let me do my job”.  I will not do my partner’s job and therefore get all the credit.   I will respect my partner’s ideas and take them into consideration.  I will use my time wisely.  If I’m absent, I will call my partner.  Partner phone number:

Student Signature:

Teacher initials:                                (This means I checked both columns, there’s a phone number above, and a student signature.)
