The Poetry of World War I-
An Illustrated Book

You will edit and illustrate a book on a poem written during and about World War I. Your book will set the poem in historical context by giving us background about the Great War and its results. You will then illustrate the poem with appropriate photos, drawings, paintings, etc. An inviting and illustrated cover with the title of the poem, author of the poem, and your name as editor.

1.  Preface:  A well-written preface about the long term causes and importance of the Great War. (See pages 621-624 and journal entry 3).

2.  Timeline:  Timeline of the short term causes of the war (those events immediately preceeding the war starting with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand).(See journal entry 2)

3.  Map:  Map of Europe in 1914 showing the allies, Central Powers, neutral countries, Western and Eastern Fronts, and major battles (already completed).

4. Illustrated Poem:  The poem, written stanza by stanza, with an appropriate font and illustrations. Students may use drawings, paintings, photographs and illustrations. You may make a picture book, multi-media presentation, a pop-up book, a book with flaps to open, etc. When making your illustrations, you should consider meaning, tone, color, texture, the appropriate image, etc. (No clip-art). Students should also include explanations for terms and vocabulary words in the end notes.  A minimum of 4 original illustrations is required.

5. Epilogue:  A well-written essay entitled "Epilogue of World War I" about the results of the war.  This essay should discuss  the casualties, territorial changes, changes in governments, changes to society (changes for women, disabled veterans), etc. (See journal entry 8)

6. Map:  Map of Europe in 1918 showing the territorial changes, new nations that resulted after the peace treaties were signed. (handout from teacher, see page 636).
